Vietnamese banh mi ('ban mee') baguettes
By definition, the Vietnamese roll or 'banh mi' starts with a light and crunchy French-styled baguette.
The classic version is a baguette spread with liver pate and an egg mayonnaise, with sliced cold cuts (usually pork). The filling is Vietnamese-style salad veges such as pickled carrot, cucumber, daikon radish, coriander leaves and the optional fresh hot chillies.
You might find the pate and mayonnaise a little strong if you are unfamiliar with this cuisine, so if you're a bit unsure, ask to have them omitted.
You can also substitute a different meat filling if you like. Their selection includes Pork, Cured Pork, Grilled Pork, Pork Meatball, Grilled Chicken, Grilled Beef, or Vegetarian.
Whatever you choose, the hero of the sandwich is the Vietnamese salad. Delivering sweet, sour and savoury, the salad tastes amazing on that perfectly light and crunchy baguette. For the full taste sensation, make sure they include coriander leaves and diced red chili.
You can choose a regular ($5) or large ($7), from the pictures on the wall, or from the containers in the sandwich bar.
$6 daily specials
The selection changes daily for these $6 specials, and they are extremely popular. Customers often wait for the trays to come out at 10.30am, just to make sure they don't miss out. On our last visit, the daily specials were listed as Chicken Lemongrass, Ginger Chicken, Black Bean Chicken, Chicken Coconut Milk, Chicken Curry, and Chicken Green Curry.
Perfect Aussie meat pies are HOT HOT HOT
Using their exceptional skills, they have managed to perfect the Aussie meat pie. Crisp gold pastry provides the perfect pocket to restrain all that delicious gravy and meaty goodness. The pastry casing manages to flex and stretch just enough to keep everything in place as you take each bite. aaaaaahhhhh
The 'plain steak' pie ($3.50) is an outright winner and hugely popular with all manner of folk, especially those of us who remember what a homemade pie is supposed to taste like. So get in early before they all sell out.
Other pies ($4) include Chunky Steak Onion, Chunky Steak Pepper, Chunky Steak Curry, Steak Mushroom, or Steak Cheese Bacon. The sausage rolls ($3) are delicious too, and their little party pies ($1.40) make tasty snacks for even the littlest appetites.
French influence in Vietnamese cuisine
Vietnam was under French colonial rule for almost 100 years, before winning their war of independence in 1954. French colonialism influenced their architecture and their regional cuisines. The Vietnamese embraced the baguette and built a new street food cuisine around it. Welcome to banh mi.
