Vivid Sydney is the largest festival of its kind in the world. And this year it's even bigger, better and brighter.
With the light installations expanding in 2017, you'll need more than one evening to take it all in. A great way to start is to jump on a ferry from Kirribilli, Neutral Bay or Cremorne Point and, from this vantage point, you'll see the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, MCA and other harbourside installations in panorama.
Darling Harbour and Barangaroo will also have some amazing projections and fountain shows and, if you've got time to go further afield, visit Taronga Zoo and Chatswood to see their unique light installations.
The "lights on" moment will wow you as the sails of the Sydney Opera House illuminate with strange and imaginary creatures, called Audio Creatures, which are inspired by the intricate beauty of insects, animals, plant life and the underwater world. Watch them morph and interact with the world and listen carefully to the unique sounds each one makes.
Sydney Harbour Bridge will host EORA, a projection that appears to emerge from blocks of sandstone. Honouring the Eora people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the festival takes place, the projection also pays tribute to Bennelong, a senior man of the Eora people at the time of the first British settlement in Australia.
From Circular Quay, take the Vivid Light Walk along winding paths through The Rocks and from Martin Place to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Don't miss the projections on Customs House at Circular Quay and the lights of the cobbled streets around The Rocks, Cadmans Cottage and First Fleet Park which will have great installations for kids. The Never Ends installation features a magic horse that you can ride and be sure to see the Interactive Human Light Clock which will turn your shadow into the hand that tells the clock's time!
The Royal Botanic Gardens will delight you with the Electric Forest, Birds of Lumos, The Sunflowers and other beautiful installations that celebrate nature and the beautiful flora and fauna of Australia.
In addition to the light shows, enjoy one of the many music events being held during Vivid. Vivid LIVE will be taking over the Opera House with some amazing acts, including Fleet Foxes, The Avalanches, AIR, Laura Marling and Nick Murphy. Look at the line-ups at Carriageworks and City Recital Hall also.
If you're an ideas person, book a place at one of the Vivid Ideas events. This year will bring in luminaries and incredible talent to share and discuss groundbreaking developments in the areas of artificial intelligence, educational advances in mixed reality, content harvesting, screen production, smart fashion and robotics.
To get the most out of Vivid, use the Vivid smartphone app which will help you to plan your visit. Start planning now so you don't miss any of the 65 lighting installations that will tranform Sydney yet again into a sensational city of colour, light and energy.
