Festival activities that will captivate and inspire
The famous Sydney festival of light, music and ideas will be commencing on 26 May this winter. It is hotly anticipated that millions of people will be flocking to Vivid Sydney, so planning ahead is essential.
The enormous program will surprise and inspire you. Vivid will have events, shows, light displays and projections running at various locations across the city and nearby suburbs.
The problem is - how to choose what to see? This list has you covered. Here are my recommended attractions and events for Vivid this year that you won't want to miss.
Lighting the Sails / Audio Creatures 26 May - 17 June, 6.00pm-11.00pm
The Sydney Opera House will be displayed in all its beautiful glory for 20 nights. Adorned with projections of wild and wonderful creatures, it will be a key highlight of the festival. The best part is that it can be seen from numerous vantage points at Circular Quay and The Rocks, but the best view is likely to be from the water. Cruises will be running during the festival by operators such as Captain Cook, Sydney Princess Cruises and Fantasea among others.

Hidden Sydney - The Glittering Mile 25 May - 18 June Cost: $50 per person
Sin city cabaret at its finest, this memorable evening will take you into the old world of King Cross to meet its night time inhabitants. From drag queens to criminals and stand over men, you will get to know the colourful, outlandish and dangerous characters of the 50s, 60s and 70s at World Bar (Bayswater Rd, Kings Cross). Find out the true stories of Mr Sin and the Witch of Kings Cross in the bar-turned-'brothel' set across four levels. The popular returning show will supply you with 90 minutes of music, laughter and saucy stories.
Special dinner offers are available to ticket holders at nearby restaurants Caffe Roma and Macleay Street Bistro, Potts Point. Drinks will be on sale at the venue.
Magicians of the Mist
26 May - 17 June, 6pm-11pm
Watch Darling Harbour turn into a water wonderland each night of the festival. The intricate show will feature water shooting upwards of 50 metres tall and projections of alluring magical figures. The combination of water and technology is an innovative blend of art that will be nothing short of magical.
Why not make a night of it? There's a wide range of restaurants to choose from, including the Hard Rock Cafe and Harbour Bar and Kitchen, both located in the Harbourside Centre, as well as Hunter and Barrell and Blackbird Cafe on the opposite side at Cockle Bay Wharf. Dinner and a free show will be hard to beat!

Code in the City
Saturday 10 June
Become a coding expert at this free large-scale workshop being held at Central Park. Run by General Assembly, the event will have a series of clinics to help you learn how to code. Talks and demonstrations will inspire you to start building your own website or app and become the next Mark Zuckerberg. Anyone can attend, no prior knowledge of coding needed!
8 June, 9pm to 3am
Cost: $35 to $45 (tickets selling fast)
A combination of light, paint and music will make Colourblast one of the most unique experiences of Vivid. The Darling Harbour event will feature three spaces for you to dance your way through. The main room will host a Ultraglow UV Paint Party and yes, it is exactly that. Ultraviolet lights and water based ultraviolet paint will create an immersive creative display accompanied by music. Paint fairies and stilt walkers will be making sure everyone is covered in paint -be warned!
Once you're painted up, visit the mezzanine level where the silent disco DJ battle will be taking place. You will be given headphones on entry and you will be able to choose which DJ you want to listen to. Let the beat battle begin!
The third space is on the terrace and will complete your night as you dance to catchy tunes amongst a smokey haze of laser and strobe canons into the early morning. Rest assured, you will never look at Vivid the same way again!
