Chatswood, let there be light
The magic of Vivid Sydney is moving into the North Shore and this year, the busy retail hub of Chatswood CBD will transform into a mesmerising deep-water world light walk journey for the first time. This enchanting festival of light starts on Friday 22 May 2015 and concludes on Monday 8 June 2015.
I participated the media launch on Tuesday 19 May 2015 and I am excited to report that there will be a huge entertaining program of light, music and ideas events to brighten up a suburban night on the North Shore. What's more, all Vivid Light events are free to attend from 6:00pm to 11:00pm.
Start the animated deep-water journey from Chatswood Interchange, where you will see the Jellyfish Chandeliers. The vast glowing jellyfish will float above the commuters and their fibre optic tentacles teeming with tropical fish. It looks like an evocative underwater wonderland with floating water features and vibrant colours.
There will be heaps of immersive light projections, installations and storytelling on a grand scale as you stroll over the Chatswood Mall. You will meet Norbert the Nautilus as he swims in the flowing river of light. There will be an animated aquarium LED light projection with glowing sea creatures and cascading waves of colour and light as you pass under the Westfield overpass.
The biggest surprise awaits you at The Concourse, where the large concert halls become the perfect canvas screens for an aquatic wonderland across the sails of the building. The Nautilus and the Sea tells the story of Norbert as he breaks free of his polluted home and discovers a world of vast oceans. It is a beautifully illustrated animation, brimming with characters from the deep sea.
Linger a bit longer and sample some the culinary delights that Chatswood has on offer. Most notably, you should try the cheapest One Michelin Starred restaurant - Tim Ho Wan in the District. Or the Hurricane's Express if you feel like having burgers and ribs. You may want to try the best Thai restaurant, Khao Pla Thai or the cheapest Thai restaurant,Tanoon Mai Thai in Chatswood. Or perhaps a hearty spicy Sichuan Master Bowl to warm you up in Winter? Walk a bit further along Victoria Ave and you can try some authentic Japanese Manpuku ramen noodles.
It is equally pleasant to enjoy a picnic dinner at the Melody Night Market. Sushi Hub also offers excellent value for their sushi rolls. Be sure to finish the night with some sweet dessert from Queen of Spades at Mandarin Centre.
If you are a budding photographer, you must participate VIVID's 'Through the Lens' photography program. The Northside Creative Photography members will offer tips and advice on night photography and you can learn the best features and techniques to capture light in the dark.
Come with your camera. It is on every Monday,Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Chatswood Library on The Concourse (409 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood).
