Sydney's own magical festival of light, music and ideas - VIVID - is set to have us awestruck once again in 2017. And this year the Barangaroo precinct will join the VIVID party for the first time, as Sydney's newest harbourside location plays host to some awesome VIVD installations.

Art and design collective, Danny Rose, will showcase their work titled A Day in the Light, which promises to be an immersive and interactive experience. In this installation the audience becomes part of the artwork as they "become immersed in light and sound melding together to recreate the phases of light over the course of a day." Described as a multi-sensory experience, as the sounds combine with the lights, the installation attempts to make you feel the sound as it relates to certain shades of light.

If their past works are anything to go by this is one you won't want to miss. Danny Rose are known for creating spectacular, super-sized audiovisual and light shows such as The Matter of Painting which was projected on to the Museum of Contemporary Art during VIVID 2016.

They also created the award-winning interactive installation Play Me! which was seen on the Customs House building during VIVID 2014 and which won the prize for innovative technology at the DIGI Awards in New York.

A Day in the Light will be running at Barangaroo Avenue, Barangaroo South every night during VIVID 2017 from 6pm - 11pm. This is a free event. For more information about this installation please click here.

Also on display at Barangaroo is Trapdoor, created by Spinifex Group, a creative studio, digital agency and production company all rolled into one. Trapdoor is described as an optical illusion of light and sound, where your job is to try to keep calm while the ground opens up to "reveal a mysterious subterranean world". It sounds intriguing, a little terrifying but irresistibly tempting, doesn't it?

Spinifex Group have thrilled us at VIVID over a number of years, lighting up the iconic sails on the Opera House in 2013 and working with artist Jess Johnson on the fabulous light displays illuminating the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2014. They then captivated us with their stunning Enchanted Sydney piece on Customs House in 2015, featuring a blossoming world of Sydney's fauna and flora.

Last year Spinifex Group created a new projection for Customs House, titled Sydney's Hidden Stories, where a blue-tongue lizard led visitors through haunting landscapes of witches and wizards, gnomes and cockatoos. Not only a light show, visitors were also able to step onto a New Reality Viewing Platform and use Huawei's smartphones and tablets for an augmented reality experience.

Trapdoor is a free event that can be seen along the Wulugul Walk at Barangaroo South, every night during the festival from 6pm - 11pm. For more information about this installation please click here.

Now in its 9th year, the installations at VIVID get bigger and better every year, and not surprisingly, so do the crowds. With over 2.3 million people attending the festival in 2016, it makes sense to be organised before you get there. Happily there is a Vivid Sydney App to keep you up-to-date and help you get around the various precincts and installations. It is free to download from the App Store or Google Play Store from May 2017.
