Although I've done reformer and mat pilates for several years, I didn't know what to expect when I walked into the brand new Vive Active studio in Neutral Bay.

The VIVE Active brand has been around for four years ago, with branches in Brookvale and Double Bay. And this month, VIVE Active expanded their fitness empire, opening their doors to a new neon-soaked mega pilates studio in Neutral Bay, just around the corner from Military Road. And although the Neutral Bay studio isn't due to open until April 9th, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend their launch event which included a studio tour (and a peep into their Vive Sculpt room featuring celebrity endorsed body sculpting technology and Hunter Lab-decked bathroom facilities) and a 30-minute Vive Total class.

The studio itself isn't massive - it holds 24 reformer beds comfortably - but mirrored ceilings and walls make the room feels twice as large so you don't have to awkwardly bump hands with the person on the reformer bed next to you when it's time to do your chest flies.



A typical reformer class at Vive is nothing like the slow and sometimes tedious reformer classes I'm used to. The class starts off easy enough, with a five-minute warm-up segment that gets the body firing. And for the next 25 minutes, I'm pulling and pushing myself into all sorts of uncomfortable positions while the lights change colours and the track shifts from Donna Summer to Calvin Harris. And just when I thought it was all over, the trainers take us through a HIIT segment when we all jump off the reformer bed and onto the floor for some squats, lunges and - yes, you guessed it - burpees.

I left the studio feeling sore and breathless but amazing at the same time. It was the most fun I've had in a pilates class and I can't wait to book into my next session when they open to the public!
