I like to get out into the country. It is much more interesting than cities and suburbs! To see where our vegetables are grown, how ordered it all is – unlike the sometimes disorganised backyard veggie patch.

We are fortunate in Brisbane in that it is not far from the city that we can see huge farms growing vegetables. It is just over one hour's drive from the city to Gatton, often referred to as the "Salad Bowl."

Call in at the Visitor Information Centre for information about the various places of significance in the area, worth visiting. Check out their website here.

The area was explored by Major Edmund Lockyer, back in 1825, and people started moving into the area in 1841, when it was recognised as a great place for growers way back then. The Queensland Agricultural College was opened and an experimental farm was created back in 1897 – now the Queensland University has a campus there. The area is known as Lockyer Valley – of course recognising Major Lockyer.

There is some interesting history documented here.

Now, sadly, there is development impinging on the farming lands, but it is still fascinating to see how ordered the properties are – with neat rows of seedlings starting out their journey to your kitchen!

As well, there are many stalls and markets where you can buy locally grown vegetables and some fruits. It is a great way to support the local farmers, and we can do that by trying to buy local in our suburban supermarkets.

There are occasional "Open Days" where you can go on a tour to one of the local farms, and there is one at an organic farm on July 31st. For more information visit the website here.

I am sure if you have children that they will learn a lot if you take them on an exploration of the Lockyer Valley.
