A series of portraits that pay tribute to Melbourne's Big Issue magazine vendors will grace Palmer Hall in August. They were previously on display for a brief period at Federation Square before heading to the Art Gallery in Ballarat.
These works are rendered by artist Virginia Hodgkinson who was inspired by the personal histories of each vendor. She selected 19 vendors to work with and met with them in Melbourne, Geelong, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Her works acknowledges a group of people in society that are often regarded as part of the side walk. One of her drawings from the Big Issue Portrait series was selected in the Rick Amor Drawing Prize.
This art project and exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary of the magazine being sold in Australia. So take the family out for a day at the Library and discover the stories behind the faces. The exhibition runs from 10 August till 20 November 2016.
