Successful punk rock singer, Violet, wakes up in a strange cabin with no memory of how she got there. The door is locked, there are bars on the windows, and she is alone. Whoever brought her here left her with a phone that only dials one number. It connects to a construction worker named Bud, whom she has never met. According to a note left in the cabin, Violet and Bud have one week to figure out the connection between them, or someone or something is coming back to take Violet's life.

Violet is Nowhere is a tense thriller by Faith Gardner. It's the second book in a series called The Jolvix Episodes, but is a stand alone novel.

I picked this book up for its intriguing premise, which reminded me a bit of the film The Old Boy, but it was not what I was expecting. I thought it would be a thriller with some supernatural elements. Instead it turned out to be more of a cyberpunk mystery, starting out with fairly subtle hints at the near future setting, then eventually giving a nod to William Gibson. I wasn't disappointed by this turn of events, just surprised.

I really liked the tension early on, with neither Violet nor Bud knowing who to trust or what they might have done to deserve to be put into such a strange situation. The ending left me with mixed feelings, and it would make for a great discussion for a book club. It's quite a page turner as well, easily finished in a day or two.

Violet is Nowhere is an usual dystopian thriller that makes for a fun, quick read.
