Held at Victory Park in Castlemaine on Saturday 20 June 2015 from 12noon to 11pm, The Village Winter Festival is a celebration of the winter solstice. In its 3rd year the region's most brilliant musicians, theatre mavericks, visual artists, pyro-mystics, storytellers and circus deviants will gather together for an event that's part carnival, part village fair and part arts festival.
Performances will be held in highly decorated tents, out in the open park or around the communal fire. Some of the highlights for the day include 'So you think you can interpretative dance', the famous village dog show (bring your dog, no cats!), the sideshow carnival with old-style games and lolly shop re-invented for 2015, 10 minute dance parties, local storytelling and the rascal-maine stage, run entirely by young people.
Watch out for a spectacular fire lighting ritual that will take place at dusk. Featuring hundreds of members of the Castlemaine community, stories will be shared about Castlemaine, some by a couple of village elders. See these stories brought to life through steampunk theatre, music, circus, puppetry and pyrotechnics
The more locals get involved, the better. There are opportunities to sing in the choir or to help make sets, costumes and special effects. This festival is the perfect way for visitors to the region to see a snapshot of the creative vibrancy that is Castlemaine. There'll be lots of good local food and drink to add to the atmosphere of the event.
