This is an absolute must-do for animal lovers, whether you're just visiting Bali or have made the island your home.

is a rescue and adoption centre currently home to over 140 cats and kittens and a handful of dogs.

If you think that sounds like rather a handful to look after, you'd be right. They have a team of staff working hard to care for all the cats by keeping them fed, watered and comfy. Some of the tiny ones require hands-on attention around the clock to keep them alive, so three staff work the night shift too.

But these rescued kitties always need more cuddles, and that's where you can help.

Cats in need of cuddles
is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 10:30am-4pm. You can drop in anytime during these hours to just have a play and a cuddle with the cats - how awesome is that? They do accept visits at other times, but by appointment only.

The centre is located on a quiet road just south of Ubud. I stopped by with my 2-year-old daughter to check it out. (I did contact them first to check it would be okay to bring such a little visitor, but the lovely owner, Elizabeth, said it was fine).

Once inside, we were asked to wash our hands and we were then shown into a room with adjoining yard which was home to around 15 cats. They greeted us with excited miaows and set about competing for the first cuddle.

We were free to play inside or out with the cats in this room, and the staff indicated another room we could also go into (which had already been cleaned for the day).

After about 40 minutes playing with the cats, one of the staff showed us where the really tiny kittens were kept, as well as the quarantine area where all new cats must stay.

A good family day out?
There isn't enough there to dedicate a full day to it (unless you really love cats), but if you're in the area and have an hour or two free, I would recommend a visit. Having said that, if you're a bit of a clean freak, it may be better to give it a miss. The staff do a great job keeping the place clean, but with so many cats in a small space there will always be some stray fur and the smell of cat litter in the air.

does great work taking care of the cats that nobody else wants and trying to find new homes for them, so you can of course make a donation to support their efforts as well.
