Villa Alba Museum, located in Kew near Studley Park, Melbourne houses some of the finest examples of 19th century painted interior decoration in Australia including panoramic marine views of Sydney Harbour and Edinburgh.

This stunning historic house was built and decorated between 1882 and 1884 and is currently being conserved and restored as a museum for the collection, study and display of interior decorations.

The house and grounds were initially created by the Greenlaws and the mansion remained in the ownership of Anna Maria Greenlaw's family until her death in 1918.[BREAK]

The Fripps then purchased the mansion and fortunately made very few changes to the fabric of the house over the 35 years they lived there.

In 1950, Villa Alba was purchased by the Royal Women's Hospital and converted to living quarters for nurses. At this time, the interior of the house was changed dramatically with the painting over of many of the hand painted murals and decorations that line the interior walls and ceilings.

Since the early 1980's slow and careful progress has been made with conserving and revealing the interior decorations. Recent works include working towards the completion of The Vestibule and the installation of period Venetian chandeliers in the Drawing Room and Principal Bedroom.

Today, the historic house regularly holds Open Days on the first Sunday of every month from 1 to 4pm.

The next Open Day will be held on Sunday 2nd of February, 2014 and all are welcome to come along and immerse themselves in the house and the recreated Victorian-style garden.

This Open Day event makes for an interesting outing for friends and families this Summer. Come and peruse the intricate, hand-crafted interior decorations found in the Villa Alba mansion and explore the garden.

Tea or coffee and biscuits are served in The Vestibule and the Eastern Courtyard. Cost $3.00. [BREAK]

Admission fees are as follows: adults are $10, concession/students are $8 and children under 18 years are free.
