Viking Wolf - Film Review

Thale and her family have just moved from Oslo to a small town in Norway, where her mother works as a police officer. One night she is at a party with a group of local teens when a girl is killed right in front of her. Thale is in shock and unsure what happened, but there is evidence of a wolf attack.
Viking Wolf is a Norwegian horror movie directed by Stig Svendsen (director of
Elevator). It is co-written by Svendsen and Espen Aukan, the writer of
Troll (2022).
I love a werewolf movie, and this one plays homage to some of the classics of that sub-genre, as well as other horror films. There are nods to
Jaws,
An American Werewolf in London and even Michael Jackson's
Thriller video. Most of all it reminded me of
Ginger Snaps (2000), but
Viking Wolf is ultimately bleaker.
There is a fair bit of blood and gore, so this movie is not for the squeamish.
The performances were excellent, especially Liv Mjönes as Liv, Thale's badass mother, who looks like a Norwegian Katee Sackhoff. Mia Fosshaug Laubacher brings pathos as Thale's deaf little sister, Jenny. Elli Rhiannon Müller Osborne is believable as the confused, desperate Thale.
The werewolf transformation effects were nothing new, but they were well done. Actually, that could more or less sum up the entire film.
Vikiing Wolf doesn't add anything new to the werewolf genre, apart from being set in Norway, but if you like werewolf movies you will probably enjoy it. It is currently streaming on Netflix, and can be watched dubbed into English, or in Norwegian with subtitles.
