Viet Thai is one of my local joints for more than a decade. It needs a bit of a facelift on the outside but actually has amazing food. Operated by a Vietnamese family, this place has a really homey feel with warm and friendly service.

I have developed some favourite dishes having been here countless of times. Tom Yum soup is a must at Thai restaurants and I've had plenty in numerous locations in Adelaide and other cities but Viet Thai beats them all. Making their soup from scratch with fresh organic ingredients, you could see and taste the flavour coming through in the soup. They don't skimp on the herbs in this dish.

One of my favourites is the king prawn tossed in garlic and chilli. This is a fried prawn dish that's done dry to get a slightly smoked flavour from the wok. The slight burnt taste from the garlic pairs so well with the prawns. This dish is also exceptional when cooked with pork.

Another dish that I always order here is the lightly dusted fried barramundi drowned in their special Thai sauce. The sauce is the star of this dish and I have not seen a similar dish in other restaurants. Lately, though, I've mistakenly ordered a different fish dish but have grown to enjoy it just as much. The sauce is more of a fish sauce base and put on the side so the crunch of the fish fillets are even more pronounced.

I always opt for stir-fried vegetables when eating here. A simple yet delicious dish with oyster sauce. I love the variety of vegetables they use in this dish, including baby corn and mushrooms.

Their fried rice is not the usual fried rice you see in many restaurants. It's seasoned gently but with enough flavour to keep you wanting more. Aside from the slight smoked taste in this dish, there's something else in it that really makes it "special" fried rice.

I tried their sticky rice with coconut milk and ice cream. The sticky rice was a bit dry but the coconut milk and ice cream balanced it out. The dish was slightly too sweet for me but great overall

Viet Thai is my go-to restaurant for takeaways, as well as dining with family and friends at a very reasonable price. Their table setting is spacious with a room in the back big enough for special celebrations. They also have a large waiting area for takeaway clienteles. But most of all, I really enjoy their food. Have a try and tell me how you go!
