Video art has been around for close to fifty years, and is an extension of artistic expression into video form - enabled by the ever-evolving development in audio and visual technology.
Fortunately for the uninitiated, a recent collection of video art is available for viewing free of charge at the Campbelltown Arts Centre.
Video oediV is an exploration of the history of video art across the generations. In this exhibition there is particular emphasis on the female form, as demonstrated by some of the feminist-style displays and, incidentally, by the fact that all the artists involved are women.
Video oediV is a combination of both existing artwork and newly commissioned pieces. It showcases
eleven individual artists and three collaborative groups . The artists come from London, Germany, Australia, Thailand, Brazil and the US.
Those who appreciate a more unconventional style of freedom of expression may enjoy this medium as it is a particularly unconstrained art form; more of a holistic sensory experience.
The artists have used video art to create a more immersive experience - easier to achieve due to the expansiveness of the format. In Video oediV the artists integrate light, sound, and other more common art forms like sculpture into the display - in addition to the video itself.
The overall feel is very contemporary - sometimes confronting, but definitely interesting.
The Video oediV exhibition will be on display until the 20th of March. For more information call (02) 4645 4100.
