Bunjil Place is partnering with ACMI to host an exhibition celebrating ACMI's vibrant collecting and commissioning program. This FREE exhibition, hosted at Bunjil Place, is the first time these works have been presented together. The Bunjil Place residency welcomes a taste of the creative artworks and experimental films forged by Australian artists.

The showcase features three moving image artworks by Australian Artists Angelica Mesiti, David Rosetzky and Ivan Sen. Through documentary footage, staged performance and rich imagery, these three Australian artists demonstrate the persistence of empathy and creativity in the face of historic, cultural or personal dislocation.

The exhibition explores the strength and fragility of human connections through time, across landscapes, within communities, and in intimate encounters.

The three works are:

The Calling, 2013 (Angelica Mesiti)

Born in Sydney and residing in Paris, Mesiti produced The Calling as a three-channel video installation focussed on whistling languages. Filmed in three distinct locations around the world, the video explores fascinating forms of communication used to send messages across valleys in isolated landscapes. In these communities, whistling languages are evolving from everyday tools of communication into tourist attractions and cultural artefacts in need of protection.

A recipient of the Ian Potter Moving Image Commission, and Australian representative at the 2019 Venice Biennale, Mesiti possesses a highly renowned and distinctive style.

Gaps, 2014 (David Rosetzky)

Melbourne based artist and educator David Rosetzky draws on material gathered in interviews with his cast to produce the video artwork Gaps. The piece looks at the transition from rehearsal to performance, in both art and life. Using speech, movement and dance, the work explores the 'gaps' between self and other.

The contribution of performers' input, Stephanie Lake's choreography and David Franzke's sound design completes the 37 minute video piece. With an extensive exhibition history both in Australia and overseas, Rosetzky has presented his work in over 30 solo exhibitions and 60 group exhibitions.

Blood, 2002 (Ivan Sen)

From urban environments to prisons and remote rural locations, Gamilaroi filmmaker Ivan Sen has travelled through many Indigenous communities and documented them with his film camera. By photographing people in their environments, he's created a video work that is a subtle and deeply moving meditation on skin, landscape, gesture and the many nuances of Aboriginal identities. Commissioned by ACMI, Blood gets its name from its subjects, with the work containing imagery of people who all share the blood of the Gamilaroi people of Northern NSW.

Ivan Sen is a Gamilaroi film director, writer and composer, whose features Beneath Clouds (2002), Toomelah (2011), Mystery Road (2013) and Goldstone (2015) have received local and international acclaim.

This free screening can be seen at Bunjil Place Gallery, 2 Patrick Northeast Drive, Narre Warren, between 10am and 4pm, from Saturday 18 December 2021 - Sunday 6 February 2022. Click here for more information.
