In 2014, when Bendigo Art Gallery ran 'Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion' they revealed (blush!) Queen Victoria's drawers, People arrived en-masse for a peek. Undergarments, particularly those worn by royals, hold a special fascination. Though I'm not sure I'd be as excited about seeing King Charles'!

But now there is no need to travel regionally to see a set of Victorian drawers. In this unique event in the National Trust's Como Ballroom, in South Yarra Dame Victoria will demonstrate and explain the ins and outs of Victorian-era undergarments.

Yes, she will reveal all!

You'll learn about the various layers under the dress and discover how a corset was a girl’s best friend. You'll be privy to what was worn under those hooped skirts in the 1850s. And how women achieved those impossible waistlines.

Join a house tour before or after the show to hear stories of the iconic Como House. You can restore your composure after the tour with a visit to the Stables of Como and enjoy tea or coffee and a selection of delicious cakes and sandwiches! To book please call 9827 6886.

The difference from the Victorian era is that you'll find room for an extra piece of cake and you won't faint from being tightly corseted when you do indulge.

Glimpse into the processes and performance of getting dressed. An installation featuring white work underwear that is very rarely seen in exhibitions, including garments from the National Trust of Australia (Victoria)’s own Fashion & Costume Collection. These include ethereal and dreamy - see lace, embroidery and hand-stitched delicate cottons together with underpinnings such as corsets and crinolines.

Como is a participant in the PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Independent Programme 2024.
