Add a little sparkle, and lots of blooming colour, to your weekend. The Victorian International Orchid Fair, running from Friday August 26th to Sunday 28th in Keysborough, is a floral extravaganza of brilliant proportions.

The annual event attracts orchid nurseries and specialist plant growers from all over the country. They are keen to display, sell and share information about both well-known orchid varieties, along with the more unusual and rare varieties, such as the Stanhopea, or 'Upside Down Orchid', members of the orchid royal family, and blooms from around the world.

Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants on the planet. Their varieties are amazingly different and amazingly beautiful. Feast your eyes on these and these. Pretty amazing, huh!

The orchid fair also has plenty of books to buy or browse, garden accessories, and other delightful plants to enjoy, such as clivias, iris, bromeliads and those hungry carnivorous plants.

Many gardeners shy away from orchids, worried that they are difficult to grow. While some varieties require some special care and attention, others almost take care of themselves.

On-hand demonstrations and expert advice from those in the know will make it easier for you to roll your sleeves up and get digging!

Here are a few tips in the meantime.
