Discounts And Freebies

Carers are often selfless people who have very little time for themselves. Their role as carers is invaluable to society but cannot be measured. Ironically they often need someone to care for them.

The Victorian government has acknowledged their important contributions that unpaid carers give to the lives of others. Cardholders are entitled to a broad range of discounts at retail shops, services and admission fees from over a thousand businesses and community organisations. Free Sunday travel on Victorian trains, trams and buses is also available for carers.

To be eligible for a Carers card you have to meet the following criteria:
Be a resident of Victoria
Be a primary carer of someone with a disability, medical condition, aged, in need of palliative care or care for someone who has a mental illness
Be a foster, kinship or respite carer

Professional carers that are paid to provide care are not eligible.

The Victorian Government Carers Card is provided as recognition of the enormous social and economic contribution to society and the support they give to some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

A card similar to a plastic credit card is provided and a Discount Directory Book called 'We Care' that outlines all the discounts available and the locations.

Never heard of it? I'm not surprised. I have tried numerous times to use the card and traders who are listed are often unaware of the card or the advantages it's meant to give. Hopefully, this article will raise awareness in the community so that carers are supported too.

What a great idea. I've pushed a few wheel chairs in my time.

You have to apply online or have a referral from your doctor. The discounts are not well advertised. Hoyts cinemas offer $1 tickets when attending with the person you care for. Free entry to any of the zoos in vic. Would love to know any other discounts offered that are worth using, discounts at fast food outlets are not really of much worth.
