Sun 27 May 2012

This Sunday May 27 experience the splendour and excitement of a Victorian Funeral re-enactment in the City as an 1865 horse-drawn hearse and cortege procession in full Victorian era style mourning clothes travels on West Terrace at 10.30 to the Cemetery .

The re-enactment is organised jointly by the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority and the Victoriana Society to commemorate the first sexton of the cemetery, John Monck who was appointed in 1837. It will also serve to launch the cemetery's new Beliefs, Attitudes & Customs interpretive trail which will complement the existing highly successful Heritage Highlights Interpretive Trail .

The grandiose procession along West Terrace will feature Sidney Harrison Funerals' horse-drawn hearse followed by the cortege in full Victorian funeral regalia, and will terminate in the cemetery grounds for a traditional committal service.

Bookings can be made with the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority on (08) 8139 7407 or by emailing [email protected].

This event is part of SA's History Festival 2012 .
