The grand old dame consists of two buildings and a clock tower joined together by a common corridor. In the 19th century the original building functioned as the Town Hall with a theatre on the ground floor and offices of various government agencies on the second floor.
The Victoria Memorial Hall was built to commemorate
Queen Victoria, who passed away in 1901, and renamed
Victoria Theatre after it was opened in 1905.
The Clock Tower was added later in 1906. It was topped by a timepiece donated by the Straits Trading Company. the
statue of Stamford Raffles was added in 1919 to mark the centenary of the founding of Singapore.
The buildings survived the air raids in 1942. After Singapore gained independence in 1965, the hall underwent a series of renovations and modern facilities were installed. The Coat of Arms of Singapore replaced the Straits Settlement's version to mark the birth of the republic.
The concert hall is currently equipped with a Klais Orgelbau which was installed in 1987. Victoria Concert Hall has been the official home of
Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) since 1980. Do come for a classical music performance here. You can book tickets
here .
On Valentine's Day 1992 this iconic building was gazetted as a
National Monument of this country. It is currently managed by The Esplanade Co Ltd. The concert hall and theatre are available for private parties and functions too.
