Victoria Park in WWII
At the beginning of the Second World War, the American forces occupied the Philippines. General MacArthur was appointed to command US forces in that region.
During November 1941, General Brereton arrived in Manilla to survey a ferry route across the Pacific Ocean to the Philippines, via Honolulu, Midway, Wake, Port Moresby, Darwin and thence on to Manilla.
On the 7th December 1941, events brought America into conflict with the Japanese. The first American forces to arrive in the Brisbane area was the Pensacola Convoy which had left San Francisco on the 21st November 1941. This convoy had been diverted to Brisbane and arrived at noon on the 22nd December 1941. It was the start of the build up of forces in Brisbane.
To accommodate all the logistic support for the American forces, a large complex of prefabricated buildings were erected in Victoria Park. The buildings stretched from Herston Road across the park to Gregory Terrace. The headquarters of the United States Army Service of Supply South Pacific area occupied those buildings from August 1943 to September 1944. The troops then moved on to Hollandia, in New Guinea.
Personal experience.
Victoria Park Golf Bistro is a considerable and charming precinct with many great halls for functions and celebrations. The place is adorned with flowers and plants and there are many sections with tables and chairs. I visited Victoria Golf Park on a Sunday morning. It was relatively busy, with a few families celebrating birthdays with their kids, anniversary celebrations and a bridal shower.
Many kids and adults played mini-golf in the putt putt area. The miniature golf was all brilliantly set up with Halloween pumpkins, spider webs, skeletons and ghosts.
There is also a beautiful deck with a great vista of Victoria Park and of the skyline. A party was being held with many hosts all dressed up and holding a drink.
We ordered a latte and a milkshake. We choose a table with chairs near to some gorgeous windows with views of plants and flowers. The service was friendly and professional. The coffee was very good and the milkshake was served in the stainless steel container nice and cold.
Just outside the Bistro, there is a delightful area dedicated to growing vegetables, herbs and lemon trees.
After our break, we decided to take a stroll in Victoria Park. Up to June 2021, the park was an 18 hole golf course. The park has been reclaimed by the Brisbane City Council and now it is available for the public for walks, bike riding and picnics. The park has stunning jacaranda trees blooming in spring and very old trees.
