is every bit an icon of Brisbane as it's more prominent near neighbour, the Story bridge.

Spanning the Brisbane River and originally known as the Brisbane Bridge, the timber structure was the first permanent crossing linking South Brisbane with the City, opening in June 1865.

As a temporary structure, it lasted just a few years with its girder based replacement opening in June 1874. However, the Great Flood of 1893 destroyed the bridge and left the city without a bridge until 1897, with its replacement lasting until the current bridge was completed in 1969.

Tragedy is part of the bridge's heritage with 23 lost on the SS Pearl, as it sunk in the Brisbane River after a collision with the steamer Lucinda.

A memorial remembers the life of 11-year-old Hector Vasyli who was struck by a car in the returning soldiers' parade in 1913.

The current bridge was opened on 1969 with a remnant arch on the south side of its predecessor with part of a tram track and a memorial to Hector Vasyli.

A stroll across Victoria Bridge takes less than 10 minutes and provides a wonderful view of the city, South Bank, the Brisbane River and the City Cats as they plough majestically along the river.

Read more on the history of the bridge on the South Brisbane website.
