Victor Harbor is a popular tourist destination about an hour's drive from Adelaide. Being South Australia's home to the Southern Right Whale, Victor boasts the
South Australian Whale Centre - South Australia's largest marine focused interpretative centre. The SA Whale Centre's prominent location in Victor Harbor owes much to the former use of its 150 year old heritage listed building. This building is where your $15 day in Victor begins. By purchasing a combination ticket, it gives you entry into the Whale Centre, as well as a return trip to Granite Island on the horse drawn tram.
In the Whale Centre, you will discover something for the entire family, from a series of audio visual displays, artifacts, whaling history and information about a range of local marine creatures, to the "Cellar of Secrets", which is a definite highlight for the little adventurer in all of us. Once in the Cellar, you can go on a fossil dig, crawl into the belly of a giant squid, experience life on board the "Steve Irwin", have your photo taken in a shark cage as well as watch a 3D movie about the Southern Right Whale where the theatre seats are inside of a specially built boat.
Now, if you ask around, you will find that everyone will tell you that no trip to Victor is complete without taking a ride on the iconic
horse drawn tram out to Granite Island.
Once there, you can take a moderate walk around the entire Island, watching the waves crash on to the rocky shores. Finishing up with a nice snack or hot drink at the island kiosk, overlooking the beautiful township of Victor. Also, if you have the time and a little extra cash, you can visit the little penguin centre on the island, where you can get nice and close to the penguins at feeding time. And yes, photography is allowed there.
Buying the tickets separately will cost a total of $23. After saving yourself $8, it's obvious that you should give yourself a reward at the Granite Island kiosk. And who knows, if it's the right time of year and if you stay on the island long enough, you may very well spot a whale, or a little penguin, which will of course complement your perfect day spent in Victor.
