is taking place this October. Walk to School is a fun, free and family friendly campaign that encourages primary school children and their parents to swap the road for the pavement and build healthy habits for life. The concept is that children and their parents will walk to school every school day in October.

Last year more than 30,000 students across Victoria joined Walk to School and together walked more than 400,000 kilometres. VicHealth is hoping 2014 will be even bigger!

How do I get involved?

First, search the website to see if your child's school has signed up to participate. If it hasn't, your child can still sign up as an individual and start logging their walks in October. You can find more information about this here .

Schools should have received information from their local council about how to participate and how to log in to register. Registered schools are eligible to receive materials and resources that will help with the promotion of Walk to School. Participating schools will receive student certificates to celebrate their students' achievements, and will be in the running for regional prizes provided by VicHealth. For more information about this, click here .

Why would I want to get involved?

Walk to School helps students learn healthy habits, and achieve the 60 minutes of physical activity recommended for children each day.

Regardless of how many times you and your child walk to school during October, your child can enter fun walking-themed competitions each week, and have a chance of winning some great prizes. Competitions will be promoted on the Walk to School website and Facebook page throughout October.

Is there a Walk to School App?

Yes! There's a free Walk to School app for iPhone and android devices to make it easier for students and families to record their walks to and from school every day.

The app includes a fun interactive game that allows children to create their own imaginary Walk to School journey, and collect bonus creatures and objects for their world with each walk they record.

The Walk to School app is available to download from iTunes and Google Play.

And finally, a few words from Western Bulldogs player Matthew Boyd to support this great initiative:
