On a drizzly cold June evening we set forth to experience the famous Woolshed dance at Vicary's Winery. The evening started with an hour of wine tasting at the cellar. Then to the woolshed for a relaxed three course bush tucker meal and of course, the famed woolshed dancing.

Freshly baked damper and a hearty pumpkin soup was a great starter to dispel the winter chill, as were the open fires that dotted the huge hall.

True to form our bush tucker meal comprised of salads made from farm fresh produce, barbeque steaks – snags, jacket potatoes – simple, hearty and warming.

Rows of wood plank tables flanked by benches on either side lined the hall along two sides, the centre space was a newly installed wooden dance floor at the top end of which a lively band belted out favourite country/ Irish songs.

The place was full – a lot from overseas, a mixed crowd of seniors /matures /adults /young adults and even a few rumbustious children who had the run of the ample spaces and were obviously having a delightful time. Most got up to jig to country favourites and a set of instructions by the band leader.

All in all, the woolshed dance experience at Vicary's Winery is an exploration of nostalgia/ history, a savour of the South West Sydney entertainment / family fun at a very reasonable price. One would say the
& #9632 ; Food: simple, hearty and tasty
& #9632 ; Ambience: reflective of an era gone by, comfortable,
friendly easy fun ambience.
& #9632 ; Service: starter served on tables, dinner self service
and meats cooked and served, drinks from a tiny bar and a
solitary efficient barman Morgan.

Morgan the cheerful barman
Probably could do with a few more service staff

& #9632 ; Amenities: Ample space, parking. However poor
lighting and inadequate signage.
& #9632 ; Cost: At $52 per person the Woolshed Dance is great
value comprising wine tasting, a three course dinner and
live band and dancing.

Vicary's Famous Woolshed DanceThe woolshed was originally part of the property "Luddenham" named after owner John Blaxland's village in England. The property then –in the 1860s - was principally used for rearing cattle and sheep for wool. The woolshed was constructed in about 1890 and facilitated shearing of 2500 sheep. Cecil Vicary took over the property in 1916, converted the woolshed to a dairy and planted the vineyard in 1918. In the 1930s the woolshed was transformed into a dairy and continued as a dairy up until the 1970s when it was converted to Vicary's Famous Woolshed Dance hall.
Its current owner Chris Niccol is himself a Roseworthy Graduate Winemaker. He continues to run the winery and the famous woolshed dance under the same name.

Vicary's Winery offers a genuine historical Australian country experience. A night at the woolshed dance certainly has a great rustic ambience redolent of a gone by era, a taste of the traditional country fare and a lively country band. The venue is also available to hire for private events and weddings.
