Are you ready to get poetic?

WA Poets Inc. is hosting a poetry slam as part of the 2018 Town of Victoria Parks Arts Season. The 2018 Vic Park Poetry Slam will be held on Saturday, April 28 at the Dutch Trading Company. Entry is free and open to everyone over the age of 18. Registrations open at 6pm and the poets will start jamming from 6.30pm.

There are some very generous prizes on offer thanks to the Town of Victoria Park which is sponsoring the event. First prize is $300, second prize is $150 and third prize is $75.

The 2018 Vic Park Poetry Slam is being organised by WA Poets Inc (WAPI). WAPI is devoted to promoting local West Australian poets and poetry. WAPI formed in 2006 after the success of the 2005 Spring Poetry Festival. WAPI's biggest annual event is the Perth Poetry Festival held in August. They also provide a number of opportunities to West Australian poets to perform and publish their work.

How does a poetry slam work? A poetry slam is a competitive event where poets are given a microphone and brought before a live audience and a panel of judges and given just two minutes to win over the room.

To hear what a slam sounds like here is last year's Australian Champion Jessie Oliver from Perth performing "Designer Soulmates".

What are the slam rules?

Poets are not allowed to use music, props or costumes.

The poem must be an original work of the poet written in the last 12 months and absolutely must have a two-minute limit.

Any topic is fine.

Your time starts when you say your first word or when the timekeeper feels you have begun (no additional time will be allocated for introductions). If you go over your time limit you will be docked points.

An MC will select five people from the crowd at random to act as judges on the night. At the conclusion of each performance, the judges will hold up cards giving a score between 1 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. Out of the panel of five judges, only the middle three scores will be counted.

The fun thing about a poetry slam is that anyone can stand up and have a go. You don't have to be a poet. Fifteen people competed last year and seven were first-timers. Is this your year?
