These days I live just north of the city of Brisbane, and though I go into the city several times a month I am usually time poor – getting to a meeting, or the train for the return journey.

On this occasion, I had gone to listen to Amanda Gearing talk about her book The Torrent at the Brisbane Square Library. I had a little time to roam – despite the searing heat of the day.

I learned about a very interesting project called Vibrant Laneways. It was in the car park that I came across an exhibition of photos by a Japanese photographer and found the billboard explaining the program.

"The Vibrant Laneways program has been successful in using some of Brisbane's forgotten spaces to create pedestrian links and spaces where people can meet and enjoy artwork and amenities." From the Brisbane City Council website.

You can find a list of the many laneways and learn about the projects. It is a good idea to visit during the weekend, when there are less people in the city and you can enjoy the art and precincts in the city at a leisurely pace. Choose a cooler day than I did!

Parking in the city carpark (under King George Square is only $5 at weekends, and you can see some of the artwork there).
