Mooloolaba is one of my favourite places to go for a weekend away. There, the winter sun is warm, the summer breeze is cool, making the weather absolutely perfect all year round. You can relax on the beach to get that tan going; go to their local pub for some steak and chips or an afternoon beer; get a bit of retail therapy along the Esplanade; wine and dine at one of the many restaurants, and sip on a coffee at any time of day. My husband and I have been coming here quite a bit in the last few years (lucky us!) and despite the comings and goings of our favourite restaurants and cafes, we are relieved to see Via Italia every time.
I must say the first time Via Italia caught my eye was the woodfired pizza oven and its blazing fire. Not sure what my fascination with fire was, but it made us grab a table and since then, it's been a favourite.
So as usual, our first meal upon arriving in Mooloolaba was at Via Italia. We dragged our starving selves to the restaurant and sat ourselves down on the terrace. After a few minutes of umming and ahhing we ordered our meals: crispy prawns for entree, chicken parmigiana for the hubby, and pork belly for me.
We sipped on our beverages and waited patiently for the entrée to arrive and when it did, we could not wait to dig in. These prawns were delectably crispy and absolutely divine. And yes, we ate the heads and all. The prawn, with a bit of lemon, aioli, and fried seaweed all in one mouthful was just perfection!
Our mains came and they were enormous. My pork was flavoursome and unreal; however the crackling was a bit chewy and got stuck between my teeth. My husband's parmigiana was a little different to what we were used to. The chicken breast sat on top of creamy polenta with anchovies, quail egg and fried seaweed on top. Definitely a must for those eager to try something new.
The great atmosphere, cool decor, mostly friendly service and scrumptious food have us coming here every time we're in this area.
