Standing in the cue at Maccas, staring at a chip making its oily way around ones shoe can be a rather unpleasant experience. The realisation that $15 isn't going to cover your coffee break however, can produce a similar one. Learn to look beyond the golden arches, and into some excellent steals as you journey into my wonderful world of survival - for less.

City
If you're in the city, Woolworths, albeit unglamorous, is your best bet- set yourself up with some strawberries, and what looks like 10L of juice for around $6. And what do you suppose is right nextdoor? Baker's Delight- set yourself up with some dip from Woollies, then get some Turkish bread from the bakery- you won't need to eat again for several days.

Outside the Art Gallery, a little coffee joint will give you the fix you need, but if you're as poor as me, always avoid the art gallery's cafe as the food's fine but you may have to trade in a Picasso to afford it. If you just want a sit down coffee and cake without the trek, The Coffee Club will offer you the average stingy cafe prices and passable quality, but head for Merchants on Murray to pay that bit less for more quality but, more importantly, quantity. If you've a bit more time, walk for a bit longer down Hay Street for mall for the usuals.

Leedy
If you just want a big, decent meal, head to Jus Burgers- there's one in Subi and one in Leedy and, whether due to their creative restriction or their trendy location, they produce exceptional food. If you're in Leedy and really feeling the pinch, never fear! Just keep walking down Oxford street and you'll hit a bakery smack bang in the middle serving scary looking pasta. Don't eat from there- instead, walk through to the back and you'll find a Baker's Delight - culmination of any student's desires.

1st Place
Now Ikea is something one associates with furniture, lights and the unusual statement that you'll always find them in the kitchen at parties. Get yourself there early in the morning however, and you'll find they've extended their talent for giving all the aesthetics of quality for a ridiculously low price- to breakfast. Bacon, eggs, tomato, 2 sausages, hashbrown- all for $2.95 or $1.95 on Wednesdays. With the money you save you could (and probably will on the tempting walk out) fit out your whole house. WARNING: only instant coffee served.

Claremont
At Claremont Quarter, and worried about Claremont prices? Looking for somewhere nicer than Farmer Jacks? Just walk out to Bayview terrace and you'll find a very quaint Dome just up near the station. If you want to be less conservative, catch the train one more station to Swanbourne and go the Book Cafe; not break-your-heart dear, and serves excellent coffee. If you want a quick fix however- there is a HJs on Stirling Highway, just down from the quarter.

Remember- be creative. Food is what you make it.
