Brighton and Sandgate are gradually developing with funky cafes entering the area and the rumour of more shops to arrive soon. The latest cafe to get locals talking is The Versatile Chef, located at 462 Beaconsfield Terrace, Brighton.
From humble beginnings as an outdoor coffee cart, the cafe opened in full swing just months ago and is fast becoming Brighton's coffee hot spot, particularly for those needing their caffeine fix on the way to work. The Versatile Chef uses Grinders Organic coffee and has a range of cakes, muffins and to-die-for brownies. However the real buzz for locals is that breakfast and lunch is offered every day; with a focus on healthy, hearty, home-cooked food – hard to find in the area until now.
The breakfast menu offers a tasty Eggs Florentine or the Brighton Breakfast (a hearty style, big breakfast) complete with a medium coffee of your choice. However, you can also build your own meal from a range of ingredients (mushrooms, a homemade potato rosti, eggs, grilled tomatoes and haloumi cheese on toast is a great combination).
The Versatile Chef herself, Belinda, has done everything from spit-roast catering to Italian fine-dining and worked abroad in Norway. She's also travelled throughout Thailand, so brings a diverse mix of flavours to the table. Lunch includes toasted 'manwiches' (man-size sandwiches) and fresh salads, including a classic Caesar and my favourite, the Bangkok Bliss with fresh herbs, noodles and tasty beef strips.
The cafe has a relaxed atmosphere with colourful decor, and you can catch a glimpse of the ocean in the breeze outside on the bar stools too.
Open Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm, and Saturday and Sunday 7am to 2pm, I suspect The Versatile Chef will be a real contender against the standard Coffee Club fare in Sandgate. Coffee can also be ordered ahead by texting 0458438903.
