Sometimes you find some of the best little venues in the most unexpected places. This is exactly how I feel about stumbling upon Verdant Restaurant at Darra. I'm not particularly familiar with the Western Suburbs of Brisbane myself and was easily fooled into thinking that Darra was largely industrial and only worth a visit if you really needed something specific.

Nestled in between two car yards on Sumners Road however is the Darra GardenWay centre. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you walk through the front doors you realize you're onto something fairly special. I'm not really much into gardening but my mum was very impressed by their range of indoor and outdoor plants. The gift and home-wares store is absolutely amazing. It is simply huge and stocks everything from clothing to candles to cookbooks and everything in between. Next time I'm looking to find a present for someone hard to buy for I would seriously consider making the drive.

Excellent shopping aside what we were really there for was food - I'd heard a few good reports about Verdant Restaurant and we were very keen to give it a go. It was a steaming hot day but the alfresco cafe had beautiful breezes and was still very comfortable. For a Tuesday lunch time it was also very busy so I'm guessing that on the weekends particularly bookings would be essential.

The staff were all very friendly and attentive and then menu is surprisingly modern and impressive. After much deliberation over the number of excellent choices presented to us my mother decided to go with the pork schnitzel crumbed with a parmesan, herb crust and served with a Waldorf salad. She really enjoyed her meal and said that the pork was absolutely delicious.

I decided to go with the Mediterranean vegetable and haloumi flan, which was served with a side salad of spinach, red onion, Kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes and parmesan and a spicy tomato chutney. This was also well seasoned and very tasty with praise definitely due to the chutney which was a real stand out with the meal.

The meal portions were generous without being over the top and, whilst Verdant may not be the cheapest lunch menu around, I felt that the quality of the food provided was excellent. Verdant is also a licensed venue and offers wines and beers to match each of their main courses. They have an impressive array of sweet treats to go with your coffee as well as serving breakfast and high tea.

As a whole package GardenWay and Verdant Restaurant at Darra is a lovely experience. I would definitely make the drive to go there again and thoroughly recommend it for your next breakfast or lunch get together.
