Venus in Fur is a Perth Fringe World Festival production.

Dave Allen used to tell a joke about a sadist who picked up a masochist at a bar. They go home and the masochist begs 'Beat me!' And with a curl of his cruel lip, the sadist says 'No.'

Masochism, the taking of sexual pleasure from submission, degredation and pain is named for Leopold von Sacher-Masoch , an Austrian writer whose book Venus in Furs, was one book of a proposed cycle called The Legacy of Cain, which never eventuated, but nevertheless has excercised considerable influence over Western thought and literature.

Venus in Furs, published in 1869, is the wellspring of the inspiration for playwright David Ives' two-handed play Venus in Fur. Hugely successful off-Broadway in 2010 and on Broadway itself a year later, the play has now been brought to Perth at the Heath Ledger theatre.

The plot is a play about a book. Thomas is adapting Venus in Furs for the stage and is looking for an actress to play Vanda - he finds an actress con-incedientally called Vanda.

The two read the draft over the course of a long session and gradually the roles of writer and actor and play and book characters blur and become less and less clear cut.

It is an extraordinay play and well brought to life by Adam Booth and Felicty McKay. This is Felicity's first production at Black Swan, although we have seen Adam in The Seagull.

Produced by the Black Swan Theatre Company, Venus in Fur is presented as part of Perth's Fringe World Festival.
