Marcia Hines is like a fine wine and gets better as she ages

The Fringe is a festival that celebrates non-mainstream arts, cultural experiences and entertainment on the foreshore of suburban Wynnum. I repeat: Wynnum, on Brisbane's Bayside. How good is it not having to travel into the city! Located within George Clayton Park on The Esplanade, the Fringe brings in purpose-built portable performance spaces, food trucks and a carnival vibe with both ticketed and free entertainment. See here for more.

So, more about Velvet Rewired, but first a confession: the Disco era bypassed me completely and I loved the Bee Gees until they started 'Jive Talking'.

Velvet Rewired is a Disco homage featuring glitter balls, strobe lights, glam outfits and that's before the music even starts.

Performed within the Fringe's Spiegeltent, a large travelling tent constructed from wood and canvas for entertainment purposes and decorated with mirrors to encourage flirty eye contact with strangers, this venue immediately presents a fun vibe. If you can rustle up a gang and get in quick enough make sure to book a Disco Booth.

Marcia Hines, a stalwart of the Australian music industry for over forty years, may well be the headline act in this musical extravaganza but she has support from some talented performers, including aerialists, roller skaters, and who knew you could be amused by a hula hoop or two? Velvet Rewired is a colourful production encompassing song, dance, and circus and is totally captivating.

Ms Hines' version of "It's Raining Men" with back up singers wearing Audrey Hepburn-esque clear raincoats was the highlight for me - full of drama, breathtaking male gymnasts hanging down from the ceiling, and colour. Disco at its best and the crowd loved it!

This cabaret-style production is seventy five minutes in length and you'll either be singing along or clapping throughout the entire time. I was even mesmerised by the costumes (and how they avoided any wardrobe malfunctions!).

Other members of the production include:

Hula Boy - Craig Reid

The Skating Willers - Pierre and Steff

The DJ - Joe Accaria

Aerialists - Beau Sargent and Harley Timmermans

Country Mike - Tom Sharah

Sirens - Jacinta Gulisano and Sasha Lee Saunders

Scheduled performances run from 16 November, 2022 through to 4 December, 2022.

TIME:

Wednesday @ 5:00PM 7:30PM

Thursday @ 6:30PM

Friday @ 6:00PM 8:00PM

Saturday @ 4:30PM 6:30PM

Sunday @ 4:30PM

Tickets are available here.

Entry into the Fringe precinct is FREE and there is a good selection of food trucks and beverages available. I have to admit sitting outside with a bay breeze amongst hundreds of joyful revellers is a good feel and both my visits have been hugely enjoyable, with many thanks to the friendly dispositions of the roaming volunteers.

Is it too late for me to incorporate glitter into my wardrobe?
