Now THIS is what a bike shop should be! Set in the groove of North Carlton and frequented by families and Lycra Lizards alike, the staff of this well stocked and rubber-scented store made my day. With sun shining through the big warehouse doors, as if receiving a blessing from above, and the forecourt logically providing bike rails for all, this 'bike shop' is nothing short of heavenly.
Number one: I was there with a budget. Not only a budget, but one set by someone else for someone else – surely the biggest downer when shopping. But the helpful man understood. He worked around my thrifty ways, before then helping a young man with a lot of money and only 'style' to buy. Truly embracing each customer.
Number two: Prices match or beat any other leading bike store. A Bunnings of the Bike World! But don't quote me on beating things by 10% - Lygon Cycles offered an almost equal service (okay, definitely equal), but some lights in particular were racked up in price.
Number three: this store is practically a community centre. The first sunny day in Spring brought the cyclists out in droves and, of course, droves need mechanics. If for no other reason, one should offer patronage to these honest and hard-working folk to reward their skills and smiles. Their service bay is set up in a room visible inside the shop, as well as operating on the foot path – a nod to our country's spontaneity.
Number four: there aren't many bike stores opening onto a bike path (and the Capitol City Trail at that). The ease with which one can ignore the existence of cars is refreshing. Bikes are definitely continuing to rise in popularity – perhaps due to the 'fashionable' nature of sustainability living in Melbourne – and I can only hope that Velo Cycles will be swept along in the craze.
Fabulous website too, but with workshops occurring regularly, you should check it out in person - on ya bike!
