Discover the Secrets to a Healthier You
Instead of spending your hard earned dollars on chocolate, candy and alcohol this festive season; why not invest in your wellbeing and attend a vegetarian cooking workshop with a twist.

Cooking Demonstration
Learn how to prepare healthy gourmet meals from start to finish.

Come December 31 it could make a huge difference to both the size of your wallet and your waistline. If the idea of finishing the month feeling lighter, healthier and more energised than previous years sounds appealing; then these events could be just what you need to reinvigorate your Christmas. Govinda's Restaurant is hosting a series of workshops and seminars designed to make you healthier while having loads of fun and learning some new culinary skills to impress all your friends.

I recently attended one of the Indian Cooking Classes at Govinda's and it was fantastic. Cooking with Ranchor will help you to better understand what you're eating; how to prepare your food in order to maximise nutrition as well as taste; and what purpose it ultimately serves your body. After all, the food we consume has a huge effect on how we feel both physically and mentally.

If you aren't feeling your best, it might be time to explore alternative ways of eating and styles of cooking. Wouldn't it be nice to leave the holiday season feeling revitalised instead of thoroughly exhausted? Here are just a few ways you might be able to achieve that and so much more.

Govinda's kicks off their cooking classes with their "Summer Cooking Seminar" on the 2nd of December in the Bulimba Library Seminar Room. This all day workshop runs from 9 am to 3 pm, so you can be sure to walk away with a ton of new knowledge and kitchen know-how at the end. A succession of informative and interesting workshops is planned for the day; covering every stage of the culinary experience.

The seminar includes: a spice emporium workshop; a dietician workshop; methods of cooking workshop; a knife skills clinic; a kitchen gadgets demonstration; a nutritionist workshop and a kofta-making workshop. Yum.

Dinner is Served
Feast on an array of delicious dishes with friends this holiday season.

Some workshops are hands-on while others will give you a chance to observe and absorb all the new information you will need to implement these skills in your own home. The benefits of this seminar are sure to outweigh the very reasonable cost of $60. Furthermore, if you get in quickly and book before November 17, you will only pay $50.

Don't worry; the price of admission also includes a delicious and nutritious morning tea, lunch and afternoon snacks. Food that looks great, tastes delicious and is good for you; that is what I call money well spent.

The next workshop in this series – and the one I have already signed on for – is an "Ayurvedic Cooking Workshop and Banquet". Ayurveda is a "wholistic system of medicine from India… that helps maintain health in a person by using the inherent principles of nature to bring the individual back into equilibrium with their true self." This ancient model of healing will be presented at the workshop by Dr. Pradeep Neupane from Nepal and give you insights into your own health. With their interactive workshop and free consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, you will be given the chance to discover your body's unique constitution and various ways to improve your well-being.

Cooking in Durban
Discover the secret healing powers of assorted exotic spices and ingredients.

Wouldn't it be fantastic to tap into your body's healing powers and improve your health? This workshop also includes an Ayurvedic cooking demonstration and banquet, thereby giving you a chance to experience the kinds of foods that promote this healing system. And you can always pick up a few spices when you are there to enhance your own cooking. Once again this workshop cost $50 if you book before 17 November or $60 if you sign-up after that date. The workshop runs on Saturday the 8th of December from 5:30 pm to 8 pm at Govinda's Restaurant.

If you are still undecided as to which workshop best suits you, there are a couple more events to choose from. On the 15th of December, Govinda's will feature their "Best Dishes of the Year". This workshop is the culmination of a year's worth of delicious and healthy recipes. The finest dishes taught by Ranchor throughout the year will be presented on the night, giving you the opportunity to experience the pinnacle of vegetarian Indian cooking in one fabulous dining experience. This workshop is essentially a celebration of both Indian and vegetarian food, thereby allowing you to explore these cuisines at their best.

Cooking Classes
Have a blast learning something new this silly season.

The atmosphere is sure to be fun and festive, giving you a chance to get into the Christmas spirit while still doing something good for yourself. Why not bring along a few friends to join the party? Aside from dining on an assortment of delicious dishes; there will also be a knife skills demonstration; a cooking demonstration; door prizes and spices for sale. The class runs from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm and costs $30 if you book before 17 November or $49 after that date. Don't miss out on all the fun; add some spice to your Christmas by signing-on for this cooking celebration.

The grand finale of these workshops is the "Vegan and Vegetarian Blast" on Saturday the 22nd of December from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. This gastronomic event will feature a 12 course vegan and gluten free feast that will tempt and tantalise your tastebuds. If you are a vegetarian or vegan this activity is not to be missed. However, if you haven't already been converted, this is certainly a great way to begin exploring the world of vegetarianism. After all, the nutritional benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables are countless. It is important to keep inspired in the kitchen as it is far too easy to consume the same varieties; cooked in the same way week after week.

Fabulous Food
Feast your eyes and your tastebuds on some seriously superb dishes.

This workshop will allow you to re-invent the way you prepare and consume vegetables by highlighting the benefits of vegetarianism; as well as giving you tips to prepare some sumptuous dishes in your own kitchen. "The Blast" will offer delicious vegan recipes; health tips; gluten-free recipes; cookbooks and a spice table. Early birds will only pay $27 for the privilege of attending this event. After the 17th of November the price of admission is $37. This workshop is sure to provide you with delicious and healthy alternatives to your regular holiday foods. This is a great thing as I'm pretty sure the health benefits start to wane after those first few chocolate bars or glasses of wine.

These seminars, classes and workshops have all been designed to give you the opportunity to optimise your health by tapping into the healing properties of food. The importance of fresh, healthy food in our lives is sometimes overlooked, especially during the festive season. If we have the power to improve our health through the food and lifestyle choices we make, then we can make a significant impact on our wellbeing. These classes offer you a chance to have fun and experience some new tastes and flavours; as well as providing you with the insight you need to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit. Forget that bag of chips in the cupboard and revitalise your health by signing up for one of these cooking workshops today.
