Whilst strolling down King Street, Newtown, I happened to wander across this little grocery store named with a huge sign spruiking 'Tofu Ice Cream' on it. Being an adventurous eater, I couldn't resist not walking in.
The ice cream comes in a range of flavours and is made with tofu used as an alternative for any animal products. Flavours included green tea, black sesame, pina colada, vanilla, chocolate, rose and french vanilla, sweet popcorn and mixed berry. I decided to get a scoop of the sweet popcorn as I was really curious about what it would taste like. The cost for one scoop of ice cream is $4 and it's $6 for a double scoop, with the choice of having it served in a cup or a waffle cone.
The scoop of ice cream I got was quite delcious although it wasn't as creamy as traditional ice cream. However, because it was less creamy, it did feel like it was a healthier alternative. There were even bits of corn pieces in it. I will definitely try the other flavours next time.
The store itself is rather small but sells a range of products including groceries, frozen foods, cakes and patisseries, chocolate, pies and even pet food - suitable for all vegans or those who are just generally health-conscious. Their brownies looked especially appetising and I surely had a hard time walking away without buying a slice but I will be back soon.
Right next door is Green Gourment, a restaurant owned and run by the same people. For more information on the products that they provide, visit their
