Born in Madeira, raised in Sydney, living in Melbourne and dreaming of Bali...
Published January 5th 2019
I'm not vegan. I'm technically not even a strict vegetarian. I joke that I sometimes call myself a part-time vegetarian. I just love food. All food. But I especially love avo toast. And avo smash. And guacamole. Avocado is all I 'avo' want LOL.

So I'd heard about this new cafe that had recently opened up in the neighbourhood, which was serving delicious vegan food, drinks and treats. The first day I tried to go there, it was closed (not open Mondays) so, it was some months after it had opened that I finally made it in...

It was going to be one of those sweltering late-30 degree days in Melbourne; I had just finished a morning yoga class at 213 down the road and thought 'today is the day!'

Armed with my laptop, so I could settle in to do a bit of work and soak in the Bali-inspired vibe, I walked in the door and found only a handful of seats along the front window or down the side of the counter/ kitchen which took up most of the cafe space.

Warmly greeted by Deb - one of The Vegan Shack's creators, I chose a window seat and picked up the menu. As soon as I saw the avo toast, I knew it was useless looking any further but it all sounded so delicious...

When the plate came out, I was totally blown away. It was probably the prettiest avo toast dish I have ever been served! A colourful work of art - I almost didn't want to ruin it...

Stacked on a funky grooved black plate were 3 slices of sourdough bread of varying size. On each slice sat a different type of avo serving - the upper and smallest slice had a quarter of an avo perched on top, covered in seeds and garnished with fresh tomato. The second, middle slice of bread featured half an avo sliced and fanned out, garnished with more seeds, nuts and tomato. The bottom and largest slice of sourdough, held a generous serving of smashed avo also sprinkled with seeds, nuts, onion and tomato.

Drizzled around the plate was almond butter sauce, more seeds, nuts and tomatoes. And to complete the dish and add a colourful pop were a few pretty flowers in yellow and purple.

Layer by layer, I dug in and yes it tasted as good, if not better than it looked. The combination of the crunchy bread, nuts and seeds combined with the flavours of fresh avo, tomatoes and that to-die-for almond butter was so yummy! It was quite a big serving and I probably didn't need to eat that much but it was too good to leave anything behind!

One thing I forgot to mention is that I like authentic Chai, just as much as I do avocados. I'm not really being a coffee drinker (it sometimes gives me anxiety!) I was excited to try their Chai. Look, it was nice, but not as spicy as I like it, so I probably won't order it again. But it does depend on your taste I guess...

As the morning wore on and heat increased, the cafe did get quite hot. The fans were on but without air-con, it did get a bit uncomfortable - although it did make me feel like I could truly be back in Bali!

There was a steady stream of customers coming through in the hour or so that I was there. Many of them were regulars, greeted by name which was lovely.

As I was paying, I had a quick chat to Jensen - the second creator/ owner who informed me that they were in the process of converting the back garage into another seating area to accommodate more people. Business is booming it seems and less than a year in, they are looking to expand.

I will definitely be back. I'd like to say that I will try something different from the menu but chances are that I won't be able to fight my avo-addiction. I will try another drink though - and maybe pick a cooler day for more delicious vegan delights!
