Taste the difference on Lonsdale Street
Sweet Bones Bakery Café is located next to Eighty Twenty café, just off Lonsdale Street in Braddon. It is different to any other venue in Canberra as it only uses organic, vegan and cruelty-free products. It is this point of difference that makes it so popular, as well as its delicious and creative use of wholesome ingredients, which have no preservatives or additives. As well as their wide range of bakery and cafe offerings, their coffee is also fair-trade organic and roasted in the local area.
This unique bakery and café has a strong following and it is easy to see why. If you are vegan, and even if you aren't, it is an inspiring way to eat for overall health and if you have a sweet tooth - then you will be pleasantly surprised by their egg-free, dairy-free cakes and slices made using certified organic flour and ingredients. Their clever use of natural ingredients and inventive way of incorporating flavour, make their bakery items a taste sensation!

Sweet Bones Bakery Café is such a busy little establishment, that our family have visited it a number of times and haven't been able to get a table. We never gave up however, so on a winter's weekend we tried again and managed to get a table outside in the sunshine - and eagerly anticipated what was the come. We had heard from one of our friends, who is vegan, about the amazing variety of cakes on offer, using beetroot juice and other natural ingredients to keep their cakes moist and the flavours robust.
To order your café meal or choose from the bakery, slide the door open of the café and walk inside. Every time we have done this to look for a table, it has been busy and full of atmosphere and weekend good vibes. The cake display case is near the door and with such a wide range to choose from, it was hard to know what to pick - so we chose four cakes to share, try out a small portion of their range. The prices were all reasonable (between $4 - $7 each) and all looked tempting to the eye - and taste buds.
To say the cakes were delicious would be an understatement. The Beetroot and Chocolate Cupcake was moist, dark and more flavoursome than any standard cupcake. The Raw Berry Slice was a highlight, with a sweetness that was rich, but not too rich. The Cake Pop was obviously tasty - as it was quickly devoured by our young daughter. The rich and chocolatey Brownie lasted mere minutes, before all there was left were crumbs - and even then, we were fighting over the crumbs! It was all over too soon.
As we looked around at other tables, other diners were tucking into their café menu items or cake offerings, served with large cups of steaming hot coffee. After "oohing" and "aahing" over the cakes, we were surprised to be doing the same for our coffees, which were some of the best we have tasted in Canberra. As we left, the line out the door for takeaway coffees was getting longer by the minute - so it seemed we weren't alone in our Sweet Bones coffee bliss.
