Veg Out St Kilda Farmers' Market
Images - Writers Own
The
Veg Out Community Gardens at the corner of Shakespeare Gr and Chaucer St, St Kilda, are
open every day from 9am to 5pm Mon-Thu and 9am to 4pm Fri-Sun. You can look but you can't touch, as all the wonderful produce you see growing there at this organic, chemical-free community garden run by volunteers, belongs to those who own the plots which they rent. You can find out all about plot maintenance
here . Most plot holders grow vegetables and herbs, but flowers and artwork are also popular, as you can see in my images here. I have a friend whom I have adventures with, and we absolutely love wandering every now and again, through the plots and paths that curve and meander, without rigid barriers between common land and each plot.
It's a joy, especially at this time, as flowers start to bloom and kiss the sky with the onset of spring. There were some rather healthy-looking vegetables too. Living in an apartment, getting out here in this fertile, creative space is good for the soul, and we love admiring not just what's growing, but the artwork as well. There are a few babysitting grandparents who bring their grandchildren to commune with nature, and there's a little spot for kids to play. If you'd like to find out how to get involved, and how to go about getting a plot,
see here . You do of course have to live in the City of Port Phillip local government area. For contacts and questions
see here .
While there we met an artist named
Salvatori Lolicato , a ceramic artist who had a workshop there. He told us he had an exhibition at the
Neighbours Cafe at 42 Chapel Street (corner Inkerman and Chapel Streets), St Kilda East, so that was our next stop after we went to
New Art gallery to check out the
Design Fringe 2024 exhibition, which
runs till 24 Nov 2024. We walked over there from the community garden after we'd had our fill of appreciating healthy growth in the plots and chatting to some of the owners that were there. Along the fence line near Woolworths, there's 4 hours free parking, making it perfect to visit, if you're missing having a garden.
Farmers Market 1st Sat Each Month 8.30am-1pm
It pays to note that on the
first Saturday of each month between 8.30am and 1pm you'll find the
Veg Out St Kilda Farmers' Market right behind the 'Veg Out' community garden, and the Acland Street Woolworths eg. Peanut Farm Reserve, Chaucer St, St Kilda. It has been running for over 20 years, and hosts award-winning farm producers from across Victoria who sell their produce directly to customers. This ensures that the person you buy from is the person who helped make it, bake, it, grow it, pick it, pack it, and prepare it with love. By shopping here you are directly supporting primary producers from around the state. You'll find both certified organic and conventional growers, all with the freshest produce available. Stay in touch with their
Facebook for updates and information about the stallholders that'll be at the next upcoming market. Look out for the
next one on the first Saturday of November.
Do note that the market is plastic bag-free, so bring baskets, bags or trolleys, or re-use your old plastic bags. It’s also a great place to catch up with locals, with breakfast and coffee available on the premises. What a great way to enjoy a slice of rural life in the city, that provides a Saturday morning food gathering experience like no other. So roll up and check out these farmers and producers that roll up early from across the state. There’s an abundance of fresh, seasonal and organic fruit and veg, free-range eggs and meats, olive oils, honey, wines, biscuits, jams, chutneys, mayonnaise, spice mixes, pates, confectionery, ginseng, breads, pasta, artisan cheeses, seedlings and flowers – all in season and low on food miles.
