Vast Interior - Timber Furniture and Homewares

From a sunken ship to your dining room
Its origins were quite small and humble. Vast Interior started out as a little shop in Coffs Harbour which seems a little ambitious given its initial size. Perhaps it is a testimony to the way Vast does business that it now has 30 stores throughout Australia and New Zealand.

I was driving along one day and was so attracted to the colours and pieces of furniture at its entrance that I made a special trip back with more time to spare. The warehouse is VAST so give yourself time to browse.

What appeals to me is the way they use materials they have refloated and rescued 300 ships from India and Indonesia and have used bits of old houses, railway sleepers, and what the owner calls "found pieces". Some lovely pieces of original art work and furniture which are carefully restored, sometimes with as many as 12 layers of lacquer to protect the timber and give it extended life.

They source a lot of their furniture and artefacts from India and make sure that proceeds go back into the community. They use sustainable wood and Vast was also the first Australian business to manufacture furniture from the Mango tree once it had gone past the age of bearing good fruit.

So there is a culture which surrounds this business, which is positive and caring, and wanting to have minimal impact on the environment but maximising the way communities and suppliers can be supported.

Their motto of "VAST builds to LAST" won't be lost on you once you have visited.
