When you're out and about in or near Perth CBD, it can sometimes be hard to find a nice place to enjoy a drink and a meal. Well, located on Aberdeen Street in Northbridge is the sports bar Varsity.
I have previously been to Varsity for a large function, but I recently went for my first visit with just a small group of friends. The venue itself is easy to find and you can walk it from Perth train station if you don't want to drive.
Walking in it's a very lively atmosphere - with large TV screens to watch sports (if that's your thing) and pool tables if you want to challenge your friends to a game or two. Varsity also offers a variety of regular nightly specials including a regular quiz night, cheeseburger night and wing night.
Fries and Chicken Tenders
Now in terms of the important things ... food and drink. Varsity offers a large variety of both. Drinks include a selection of tap beers - like Single Fin, Great Northern and Somersby Cider, cocktails and mocktails - like Espresso Martini, Blue Steel and Miami Vice, milkshakes, wines and spirits. Now for the food. You are spoilt for choice, even people with specific dietary or allergen needs are catered for on their own menu.
My dining partner and I decided to share a simple bowl of fries and some chicken tenders, while our friend enjoyed The Presley burger with some onion rings. The fries were perfectly cooked and served with a very tasty dipping sauce, but I think there could have been a couple more tenders in the serving. We chose to have ranch dressing with these but there are other options if that's not your thing. The onion rings our friend got were huge and that was because of the actual onion! And feedback on the burger was good.
Speaking of burgers - there are 12 to choose from on the main menu, and families are catered for too with a kids menu for your little ones.
Overall, this is a good venue to enjoy a meal and a few drinks with friends - even if you're not a sports fan. Varsity Bar Northbridge is open daily from 11am and is open till 10pm during the week, later on Friday and Saturday nights.
