The
Teddy Bear is one of the most popular creations in history with nearly every child owning one at some stage of their youth. The stuffed animal was the brainchild of Morris Michtom, who after seeing a cartoon drawing in the Washington Post of Theodore Roosevelt depicted in a bear hunting trip in Mississippi, was inspired to design a bear. He made a small soft bear cub and displayed it in his shop window with a sign Teddy's Bear. He then sent a bear onto Roosevelt who gave him permission to use his name. The toys were an immediate success and Michtom went on to establish the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
The popular "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" song has been recorded by many artists over the decades. Its melody was written by an American composer John Walter Bratton in 1907 with lyrics added in 1932 by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy.
