I've travelled across the world and lived in several countries soaking up cultures, experiencing fine cuisine and having lots of fun at all the major tourist attractions. Now I seek out super Sunday activities and restaurants for my family!

I only review places I'd recommend to friends
Delicious café experience

I'm always on the hunt for the best cafes and rarely frequent a venue more than one time. Vans is a place I can keep going back to and eagerly recommend to others. Even the tiny details, such as easy online booking and the ability to book a highchair with prompt confirmation by email, make the Vans experience ideal for a planner such as myself. Of course, you can still just turn up and with the high-speed professional service, tables seem to be cleared very quickly.

Tables are packed a bit tight in some areas but with the bustle and chatter, you'll hardly notice. If you're really fussy, opt to book an outdoor table on the sidewalk or a quieter table in the garden area out back. Each visit, I've been promptly greeted by a host and my reserved table has been ready and waiting. The restaurant is justifiably busy – the food is incredible and staff are efficient.

If you bring a child, be sure to ask for the children's menu and you'll be provided with a colouring mat and pencils to use as well. The children's portions are enormous for younger children but perfect for older ones. For those bringing a dog, book a delightful table outdoors and your pup will be happy lying down or sitting on a chair. Yes, I saw a dog sitting at a table! As a dog lover, I loved seeing how well the staff took care of this couple and their beloved pet.

I'm a fussy coffee drinker and my partner is even more selective when it comes to his iced coffee. Vans has the best coffee we have experienced in Perth to date. Strong and flavourful, one cup isn't enough – especially in an atmosphere that makes you want to linger and enjoy a longer meal. This is the kind of cafe atmosphere I dream of finding but is rarely presented in Perth.

Vans is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You'll find a clever spin on usual favourites as well as some innovative dishes on the menu. The "hot potato cake with smoked salmon, soft poached egg, wilted spinach, lemon butter" is highly recommended. It is delicious and the perfect serving size to delight with its exquisite combination of flavours.

The "spicy corn & coriander fritters, soft poached egg, smashed avocado, chilli jam" is another great choice. My partner opted for a burger that looked enormous and amazingly juicy with a soft bun and perfectly cooked fries. A connoisseur of burgers around Perth, he said it was one of the best he's had. The restaurant offers daily specials as well as their regular menu.

Vans can be a little pricier than the average family might spend but the quality of the food, the cheerful and professional service, plus a bustling but very clean atmosphere – are well worth it. The dessert selection is divine if you have room – or they'll put it in a box for you to take home!
