Like Christmas, Valentine's Day creeps up and hits us when we least expect it.

All of a sudden, your friends start comparing notes on where to celebrate Valentine's Day and woo their loved ones.

Advertisements for jewellery, florists and chocolate treats become more prominent until it is quite impossible to ignore them.

And of course if you are in a relationship, your partner starts having romantic ideas and dropping hints.

But what if you're single?

Do you just ignore it until it all blows over? Or do you feel that you have been cheated or left out somehow?

Here are a few tips what to do for Valentines Day.

[SECTION]Ignore It[/SECTION]

Ignoring Valentine's Day can be difficult, especially when your friends and work mates keep banging on about it. The conversations on the topic can be almost interminable, and people start wondering about your prostate if you run off to the loo every time the subject crops up.

You can almost start feeling like there is something wrong with you for not having a partner. If so, it's time to remind yourself of a few home truths.

  • marriage is expensive, and divorce is even worse
  • it does not look glamorous wandering around in matching his and hers tops
  • being stuck at home with the Significant Other is not better than having a drink with the boys (or girls)
  • everyone knows that singles have more fun
  • eternal love is a myth - unless you married your dog.

If ignoring Valentine's Day is not working, then it's time to up the ante.

  • steal all your neighbours' roses so they can't use them romantically
  • take a sicky on the day so you don't have to hear what others are doing
  • take a pin to the photo of that person in Finance who turned you down when you invited them out
  • invite your single friends (if you have any) to come over for a party
  • eat yourself silly by lashing out on take-away, as all the restaurants will be booked out with doe-eyed couples
  • rent a copy of The St Valentine's Day Massacre to watch while you eat

  • [SECTION]Get Even[/SECTION]

It's a bit old hat ordering a ton of horse poo to be delivered to your ex's place, and there's no point getting 10 extra spicy pizzas delivered to them since they won't be home anyway.

You could try bribing a waiter to put a treble dose of laxative in the ex's meal, but most waiters are so hopeless that they would give it to the wrong person anyway.

Here are a few other ideas for Valentine Day:

  • pretend that you're a jeweller and call advising that the diamond ring is now ready
  • send a fake email confirming their first class flight booking to Paris
  • place your ex's photo on the dart board bull's eye
  • kidnap his/her pet guinea pig to squash any romantic ideas
