Pucker up and don't delay. Valentine's Day is on the way. Sunday February 14th is the day lovers all over the world express their love for each other. How will you spend yours?

Well, if you're single, I suggest devoting the entire day to self-pampering and self-love. Or doing something you really love to do. Or spending it with family and friends you love. I don't think it fair that couples have all the fun.

If you have that special someone, let's stop for a minute to look at a few alternatives to the traditional ways many spend their Valentine's Day.

Yes, you can book a restaurant – and sit cramped amidst dozens of other couples on a very noisy night when places are so packed, you can't find a car park, let alone your waiter. Dining can definitely be romantic and fun, but the same sentiment can be shared on any night. We are, after all, intelligent human beings who don't really need to be told when to have a special dinner with our partner. Or, you might like to share a quiet dinner in. It can be made special and inexpensive with relatively little effort. Click here and scroll down for some ideas, or maybe arrange a pizza party for two, sharing the workload, of course.

Those with children should beg, steal, borrow, plead and cry to have them looked after elsewhere for the night. A rare Sunday night sleepover isn't the end of the world. If that's not an option, exhausting them during the day so that they crash early might be the next best thing.

Making a whole day of it is ideal, as you have loads more time to really relax and enjoy your loved one's company. We're lucky to have so many idyllic picnic spots within easy reach, before you know it, you'll be lazing around leisurely and gazing up at the sky through a canopy of trees.

Flowers, while beautiful and a great pleasure, also die. Consider giving potted plants that are in bloom for longer-term floral bliss.

Chocolates, as we all know, are simply divine and very romantic, but why not set aside some time to make them together? You can make your own chocolate. If that's too hard, simply melt prepared chocolate, pour it into fun-shaped molds, and refrigerate, or perhaps make choc-dipped strawberries.

If that's still too hard, dip the strawberries in Nutella (not the home-brand one) – and then feed them to each other, of course.
