Valentine's Day is a very special occasion for many of us, especially the young and romantic. It's a day to spend time with someone special, and it doesn't need to involve spending large amounts of money. An expensive Valentine Day gift, or a meal in a classy restaurant may not say "I love you" in quite the way that you would like. Sometimes the simple things are best - like enjoying free.

We're lucky to have three Botanic Gardens in Adelaide. Adelaide Botanic Garden is central with many attractions including the scenic First Creek Wetland , stunning Bicentennial Conservatory, and a first class restaurant . In contrast Wittunga Botanic Garden is known for the vivid colours of its exotic plantings and its wildlife, while Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is convenient for Adelaide Hills residents.

All three Botanic Gardens in Adelaide are free and have extended opening hours on Valentine's Day, to tease you romantics to enjoy their seasonal splendour together. The special opening hours are extended until 8pm at Adelaide Botanic Garden, Mount Lofty Botanic Garden and Wittunga Botanic Garden this Valentine Day February 14, so there's no excuse to miss out on an after-work twilight date.

Why not enjoy the gardens in style, and arrange some tasty treats to nibble on together? After all, you have probably explored your partners ear before. For a DIY option, pop into the Adelaide Central Market (or local gourmet supermarket) and choose from the mouth watering range of munchies that are available, then pop your acquisitions into an Esky until the magic moment. This is particularly important if you are going to Wittunga or Mount Lofty , as no food is available in those gardens.

Gourmet picnic hampers for two can be pre-purchased for Adelaide Botanic Garden at The Gardens Cafe (phone 8223 3526) and you can take your pick of countless secluded spots around the Gardens to throw down your picnic rug and tuck into a moreish spread as the sun sets. I do recommend steering clear of the Lunatic Asylum morgue , unless you are a little kinky. Skinny dipping in the park wetlands is a definite no-no, and the punishment for exposure may be worse than you imagine.

For anyone preferring a liquid dinner, there's a pop-up bar on the Schomburgk Pavilion. Treat yourselves to a few relaxing drinks before you pop whatever question may be on your mind on this very special day. Not too many - or you might forget the question.

Bookings are open for the Botanic Gardens Restaurant if you really want to treat that special someone (be quick before it's booked-out!) to an eight-course degustation and optional matching wines .

In the event you want to make a night of it in the Adelaide Botanic Garden, book tickets to Academy Award-nominated The Greatest Showman (starring Hugh Jackman), which kicks off at Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park at 8:30pm.

At Wittunga and Mount Lofty gardens there's no entertainment, just you and your partner, musical bird calls, the croaking night calls of frogs and possibly the grunting of fornicating koalas.

Isn't magically romantic?

Oh if you don't have a partner, here are some tips .
