Hankering for something American after your big overseas trip or wanting to taste something you're seen on an American television show or movie? Perhaps you are from the USA and now live in Australia, but still long for the taste of something familiar that reminds you of home. USA Milkbar just might have it for you. If they don't, perhaps you can suggest a popular product they can carry.
Hugh would be the man to see. Though started by his cousin whom has since moved on to importing, Hugh took over the store 10 months ago. He mentions that most of his customers know the products he stocks as they have seen it on some television show or the other. He tells me it's not all about the money as he gets great satisfaction from the delight of his customers whom have found something familiar to them.
Hugh openly admits that the prices though reasonable at the moment, could be even better towards the end of the year when he starts importing directly instead of buying from other suppliers as he does now.
This is the first time I've been to the shop, but it always intrigued me being called an American milkbar as I flew past it every time I was running to catch a train. It's not a very big shop, but if you're feeling a little bit American, check it out. Have a chat with Hugh.
The store is open from 11am to 7pm on Monday and Tuesday and for two hours later till 9pm from Wednesday to Sunday. It is closed on public holidays. It is located in the trendy Greville street, towards the Prahran train station.
They have a Facebook presence and even though they have a website, it says word for word "We are closed temporarily to upgrade the systems for a better service (our shop in Prahran is still open). We will be back on December 2014 with the Largest USA Supermarket in on&off. We will guarantee you a lowest price ever. Thank you very much."
I guess this is what Hugh meant when he said things were going to get better towards the end of the year in regard to pricing.
