Melbourne CBD is all about cafes: sprawling out over every street footpath, tucked away down impossibly tiny alleys and even underneath bridges. Some of the unsung, but most frequented cafes in town however, are tucked quietly inside our modern, ubiquitous high rise buildings - servicing the busy office workers desperate for a good espresso to get through their 10am meeting.

From the street, you are never sure whether these cafes are the exclusive domain of the buildings workers, but that is not the case. Usually situated on the main floor and prior to walking through any security, these 'inhouse' cafes often occupy cavernous and architecturally interesting spaces. They usually are good value and unpretentious but smart and efficient.

I ventured into one of these today, to escape the swirling autumn winds outside No. 50 Lonsdale Street, and found myself at the very friendly Urban Table cafe, in the foyer area. Full of varied natural wooden block seating reminiscent of a grown up version of lego, this huge, light-filled area with towering glass walls to the street, somehow manages to feel very welcoming, and allows you space to breathe often not present in many of Melbourne's cosy cafes.


There is a good selection of hand-made delicious muffins on offer (From Fig Fine Foods) - and not just the usual fare. I can really recommend the 'St Clements' - an orange and lemon mix. The Italian hot chocolate is delicious - not sweet nor too rich - perfect. The coffee is a 4-bean medium blend of Merlo coffee and the barista is also the owner, who really cares that you have a great experience. This is reflected in the friendly and efficient service, reasonable prices and clean tables.

The cafe is open early from 6am right through to 5pm. Coffees are a reasonable $3 for a small one, through to $4.20 for American style 'jumbo' if that's what you need to get through the day! Highly recommended.
