In 2013 Urban Myth Theatre Company brought you a exciting and moving production of Macbeth and now Adelaide audiences will take delight with their presentation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

It is not only directed by Artistic Director Glenn Hayden, but it is also his last production with Urban Myth Theatre Company before leaving for overseas. The cast is full of Australia's future theatre leaders, makers and performers. They have gone through the Workshop Program; some of them are founding members of the Senior Ensemble and are about to embark on their professional training

This ensemble is really important because it gives young people an opportunity to think about whether they want a career in performing arts and to learn that a career in performing arts has rights and responsibilities, and that you actually as a theatre maker and an actor you are there to tell the world something.

Set/costume designer Kerry Reid and professional lighting designer Alexander Ramsay, have created this modernised production presenting the characters in contemporary attire, without sets and with the minimum use of props ensuring the performances outshine imaginative and artistic backgrounds. On entering the theatre the audience see a dimly lit stage with a few characters highlighted with diffused light, standing motionless behind see-through lengths of white fabric hanging down before them. This scene clearly sets the mood for the drama and exciting performance that is about to unfold.

I don't wish to spoil the play by revealing too much, but there are moments when there are some very clever references connecting with contemporary life that provide some wonderful humorous relief between the tense dramatic scenes. The audience clearly enjoyed these moments Judging from their laughter.

Choreographer and fight trainer, Ruth Fallen can feel proud of her work with creating the many fight scenes without sword fighting but with impressive knife fights.

This young ensemble of performers present an exhilarating production of Shakespeare's classic love tragedy, which will be a must for students, teachers and theatre lovers as this young cast bring such vitality and excitement into the characters they play.
